Pet Passports

TAKING YOUR PET DOG OR CAT TO FRANCE

Before booking your ticket you must ensure that you will be able to bring your four-legged friend back into the UK.This will only be feasible providing your pet has been issued a passport under the Pet Travel Schemes (PETS).

The rules regulating the PETS changed on 1 st January 2012.

New Pet movement rules which makes travelling to and within the EU with pets cheaper and easier.
Under the new rules all pets still need to be vaccinated against rabies.
Pets from the EU and listed non-EU countries such as the USA and Australia no longer need a blood test and only have to wait 21 days before they can travel.
Pets from unlisted non-EU countries such as India, Brazil and South Africa are able to enter the UK if they meet certain criteria to ensure they are protected against rabies. This includes a blood test and a three-month wait before they may enter the UK.
Whilst animals must still be treated for tapeworm (Echinococcus Multilocularis), tick treatment for pets returning to the UK is no longer be required.

Top 3 Tips:  Travelling the UK with a pet via France

  • Ensure that you book an appointment with a vet. Your pet must be seen by the Vet at least 24 hours before your intended date and time of departure for the UK;
  • Ensure that the vet enters the necessary information in the pet passport correctly – check that the date and time are accurate;
  • If travelling back via the Eurotunnel, before checking in make sure that you visit the pet check which is situated on the left of the entrance before you get your boarding pass (look out for the ‘paw’ sign!). There your pet will be scanned to ensure that its chip number matches its passport.  The officials will also check your pet’s passport to ensure that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies and received treatment against worms.

Finally your pet must travel back to the UK via an approved transport company on an authorized route.
